One trick that I have found is that strategically placing 2- 1lb bales of barley straw per ¼ acre in 3 feet deep of water 7-10 days before applying HB Pure Bacteria really helps the bacteria colonize and multiply much faster. It is not necessary to do this, but just an extra tip for getting the most bang for your buck. Decaying barley straw creates the perfect home for bacteria to thrive on.
Apply HB Pure Bacteria early in the season when water temperatures reach 60 degrees. HB Pure Bacteria for lakes and ponds is safe for people, pets, plants, fish and wildlife; there are NO water use restrictions. One Gallon treats ¼ acre, 4 gallons treat one acre. For ponds with heavy nutrient loads, duckweed, watermeal, filamentous algae, or several feet of organic muck, or with watersheds that bring in extra nutrients, we recommend monthly or bi-monthly treatments. This product does not instantly cure, kill, or control infestations of duckweed, watermeal, or filamentous algae, no bacteria does. What it does is to help keep those plants from coming back by fixing the actual problem causing the weeds. Problematic weeds are just symptons, they are the result of too many nutrients. Once the aquatic vegetation and algae have been killed and their seeds eliminated from the water, the bacteria will eat up the available excess nutrients that feed those problematic weeds.
